Parking Deck Expansion Adds 1,300 Spaces
Huntsville International Airport recently announced the opening of the parking deck expansion, which adds more than 1,300 spaces to the existing deck, bringing the total number of deck spaces to nearly 3,000 and total public spaces to more than 4,000. The expansion of the deck is part of an overall $26 million parking improvement project that will include improvements to surrounding roadways, relocation of exit toll booths, and the addition of more exit lanes to better serve customers.
“The expansion of the parking deck provides a much-needed component to theairport’s existing infrastructure to continue serving the needs of our passengers for years to come,” said Mark McDaniel, Chairman, Board of Directors, Huntsville International Airport. “Normally, the existing deck at the airport reached capacity at the beginning of the work week. Now, with the addition of more than 1,300 spaces, we anticipate that our passengers will now have a choice of covered parking or surface parking located north of the deck. While the expansion is expected to accommodate our growing passenger volume, should the deck reach capacity, plans are in place to continue developing parking for the future.”
According to Rick Tucker, Executive Director, Huntsville International Airport, “Upon completion of the $26 million parking improvement project and modifications to the existing deck, an upgraded parking space counting SMARTPARK system will be implemented. The system, which was initially installed with the opening of the deck, is a wireless differential counter that tracks the number of vehicles entering and exiting a parking garage and digitally displays the number of available spaces on each level to motorists in real-time. As well, with the expansion of the parking deck, office space for each of the rental car companies will be added on the first level of the south side of the deck, and this space will enable rental car companies to begin offering expedited return service, which will be an added customer service benefit.”
The parking rates at Huntsville International Airport will remain extremely competitive. With the overall $26 parking improvement project, there will be a minimal rate increase of $1 per day for levels 2-6 of the parking deck. Tucker reiterated that providing passengers with ample parking while at the same time keeping prices competitive with other airports in the region was a key objective in moving forward with the parking improvement project.
Effective March 23, the daily rate for levels 2-6 of the parking deck increased from $9 per day to $10 per day. The hourly rate remained the same at $1 per hour not to exceed the daily rate. This marks the first rate increase for levels 2-6 of the parking deck since July 2004. Levels 2-6 of the parking deck are considered daily (long-term) parking whereas the first level of the parking deck is considered hourly (short-term) parking and is designed to be the most convenient place to park for people who will only be at the airport for a short period of time, such as persons picking up passengers.
